WBA Voting Rights Forum and Voter Registration Drive A Huge Success!

 

The Washington Bar Association registered over 60 individuals to vote in Southeast, Washington, DC. Recently, the WBA partnered with the Community Church of Washington, DC, located in Southeast, to host the WBA's Knowledge Is Power 2-Day Voting Rights Forum and Voter Registration Drive on October 1st and 2nd.

The Voting Rights Forum panelists were Rudolph McGann, Staff Attorney at DC Board of Elections; Marcia Johnson Blanco, Co-Director of the Lawyers’ Committee’s Voting Rights Project;  Edward Hailes, Jr., General Counsel and Managing Director of the Advancement Project; and Trevor Reaves, Partner at The Reaves Firm, LLC.

Kevin Judd for President-Elect of National Bar Association

 

 

 

 

Our very own, Past President, Kevin Judd is running for President-elect for the National Bar Association. Kevin’s experience as a past NBA Vice President and current Board Member At-Large has demonstrated to him the urgent need for us to focus on the financial stability of the NBA, so that we may better serve the needs of our members and to remain in the forefront of issues affecting our communities. Kevin believes it is imperative that we quickly stabilize and rebuild the NBA by:

1) fully implementing sound financial policies,
2) emphasizing professional development for our members and
3) leading the organization through consensus [...]

Justice Department Opens Pattern or Practice Investigation into the Baltimore Police Department

Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch announced today that the Justice Department has opened a civil pattern or practice investigation into Baltimore Police Department (BPD), pursuant to the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. The department’s investigation of BPD will seek to determine whether there are systemic violations of the Constitution or federal law by officers of BPD. The investigation will focus on BPD’s use of force, including deadly force, and its stops, searches and arrests, as well as whether there is a pattern or practice of discriminatory policing.
